What is Estancia Ranquilco?

Estancia Ranquilco is a remote family-owned 100,000-acre horse and cattle ranch nestled in the foothills of the Andes. It is a vast expanse of land in Patagonia, stretching across leagues of high steppes, river valleys, grazing meadows, and jagged cliffs, into the very heart of the Argentine cordillera. Ranquilco’s western boundary borders Chile—the high country—graced with lakes, waterfalls, condors, hot springs, and weeks of wandering.

Where will I stay at the Estancia?

The Estancia offers a variety of rooms, double and single occupancy, with outstanding vistas and old world charm. Each room is a mix of simplicity and luxury, a unique sanctuary for inspiration and enjoyment. See link above for more details about accommodations at the Estancia.

Is there Internet access?

Yes, we do have satellite Internet access at the Estancia; however, it is both limited and notoriously slow. Being mindful of our remote location and that we are reliant on our hydroelectric system, we carve out a block of time for connectivity. We appreciate your understanding regarding these parameters.

Is there phone service?

We have no traditional phone service at the Estancia, either landline or cell. We do have a satellite phone available for medical emergencies. We also have access to Skype accounts and will make them available in the event of an emergency.

Do I need to be an experienced horseman/horsewoman?

Your horse companions are experienced with humans, so you do not have to be experienced with equines. We will provide you with a complete experiential orientation to horseback riding and horsepacking skills. With the help of our experienced guides and reliable horses, you will learn how to travel comfortably on horseback and you will begin to become proficient at the art of horsepacking.

What kind of food will be served?

Freshly prepared meals are provided throughout your stay. Much of our food will be sourced directly from the land - vegetables from the gardens, milk and cheese from local cows, and meat from the ranch's own cattle and goats. Staples such as grains, beans, and pasta come from town. Meals on the pack trips are more simpler nature - we enjoy dried fruit and nuts, hearty stews, pastas, and sandwiches while out on the trail.

What will the weather be like?

The weather in March is beautiful at the Estancia. Temperatures range from the mid 60s to upper 70s throughout the day but can dip as low as 30 degrees at night. Please be prepared for the potential for cold evenings on the mountain trip.

What kind of power is available?

Ranquilco is run by self-generated hydroelectric power. Most available power is 220 volts as is typical in Argentina - you can purchase an adapter kit prior to departure for Buenos Aires for 110 volt items if needed.  No high-draw appliances like hairdryers, please.

What should I pack?

A complete packing list will be sent to you upon request.
